In the last post we looked at overtising steps. This time we’re looking at overtising symbols, or as I like to call it: revealing the secrets.
Without a doubt this is one of the fastest principles to implement, one of the most fun, one of the most empowering. I’m get very excited about this idea because it instantly changes so much of the experience of learning maths for your students, and so of course will change so much of your experience of teaching maths.
It’s such a simple idea, yet it’s not at all obvious.
Once you see it, you’ll never go back. You’ll never be able to. You’ll never want to.
Your students’ lives are about to get progressively easier as they move through maths, rather than harder.
Let’s start with these topics; if you were going to teach them for the first time, which example would you start with?
Every time, the obvious choice, the received wisdom, the temptation, is to start with Option A.
Every time, starting with Option B makes everything easier.
